The Cost of Vehicle Registration in France
When buying a new or second-hand vehicle in France there are several taxes to pay.
The principal tax is the taxe regionale, the amount of which is determined by the power rating of the vehicle and the rate set by the local regional council.
In addition, new vehicles also pay a pollution tax (taxe sur les véhicules polluants), which depends on the CO2 rating of the vehicle.
There are also potentially several other minor taxes.
The formula used to calculate the amount payable is complex, but the government have recently made available an on-line simulator.
You can find the simulator at Simulateur - Estimer le coût du certificat d'immatriculation.
To use it select several elements from a drop-down menu, as follows:
the reason for your request, such as change of owner on a second-hand vehicle ( Immatriculation d’un véhicule d’occasion)
the type of vehicle, normally a 'Véhicule de tourisme'
date of first registration
the power rating (P6 on the existing certificate)
the type of fuel used
the department where you live.
Although easy to use and reliable the tool does not guarantee the calculation, which is therefore only an estimate.
