On the registration of a new or second-hand vehicle in France following purchase or a change of ownership taxes are payable.
The main tax on all vehicles is the taxe régionale, the amount of which varies by region.
If you are purchasing a new vehicle, then a pollution tax (taxe malus sur les véhicules polluants) may well also be payable. This tax has once again been substantially increased this year, and there has also been a reduction in the pollution threshold triggering a liability for the tax.
Finally, there is also a tax on the weight of the vehicle (taxe sur la masse en ordre de marche) where the weight exceeds 1600kg.
Separately, customs duties may be payable on the importation of a vehicle into France, which you can read about in our guide below.
You can read about the taxes in our updated Guide to Vehicle Registration Taxes.
